Hoke County House of Raeford Ammonia Leak Forces Neighborhood Evacuation
A major leak of ammonia from a chicken processing plant in Hoke County forced the evacuation of about 800 people living near the plant. The plant, run by North Carolina based House of Raeford, apparently sent about 6000 pounds of the toxic ammonia into the air. It is also reported that this was the third major accident for the company involving chemicals. Click here for an excellent story in the Charlotte Observer about this incident.
This case is very similar to the case involving the explosion at the EQ facility in Apex back in 2006. In that case, the evacuation was far larger but likewise was the result of a chemical incident. The lawyers at Hendren & Malone were instrumental in securing a recovery for the families that evacuated due to the EQ explosion.
