Shirley Monk Killed in Mount Olive, NC Crash

A 69 year old woman named Shirley Monk was tragically killed on Saturday in a crash near Mount Olive, North Carolina. The crash happened around 12:18 p.m. on U.S. Highway 117. According to available information, Ms. Monk was traveling northbound on US 117 when she was hit from behind by a Toyota SUV driven by a teenager.

After the impact, Ms. Monk’s vehicle was forced off the roadway. Tragically, she did not survive the collision. Initial reports indicate that inattention and speed on the part of the teenager driver of the Toyota SUV contributed to this collision. At this time, it is not clear whether that means that the driver was using her cellphone at the time of the collision or was distracted in some other way. The NC State Highway Patrol should perform a significant investigation of this collision to determine every contributing factor to this crash.
