A gentleman named Steven McGregor was killed early Friday morning while he walked to his job at a local McDonalds near West End, North Carolina.

The accident happened on Route 211 likely before 5:00 am as that is when Mr. McGregor was scheduled to begin his shift at McDonalds.  Apparently, a surveillance camera at a nearby convenience store captured an image of the vehicle suspected of hitting Mr. McGregor and that vehicle is now in storage. Tips from people who called into the NC State Highway Patrol were helpful as well.  As of this time, no arrests have been made but the State Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident. Apparently the driver has also now been located.

Mr. McGregor was 23 years old.

On Monday afternoon, a tractor-trailer apparently changed lanes and struck a vehicle driven by a New York man named Gary Holliday.  As a result of the collision, the car driven by Mr. Holliday was knocked down an embankment and into the adjacent trees.

The accident happened around 3:00 pm just north of the intersection of I-95 and NC Highway 42.  The tractor-trailer, which apparently has some green paint, was switching lanes and may not have realized it hit the car.  By all accounts, there were some heroic efforts by other travelers that helped Mr. Holliday from his car.

Hopefully, the State Highway Patrol will identify the tractor-trailer involved in this wreck as it appears that Mr. Holliday was seriously injured.  Most tractor-trailers carry at least $750,000 of insurance in order to comply with federal standards and Mr. Holliday may need every penny of this money to cover his medical bills and injuries.  There may also be a question of why Mr. Holliday’s airbag failed to deploy and whether that contributed to his injuries.  Depending on the age of the vehicle involved, there may be a claim against the manufacturer of the car regarding the airbag.

A terrible accident in Wilson NC has resulted in injuries to two young children who were getting on a school bus.  The accident happened in the Wilson County community of Sims.

Apparently, the school bus had stopped in front of the children’s home at around 6:50 am and had activated its stop arm and caution lights.  A man driving an SUV in the opposite direction did not stop and hit the children as they crossed the street.  The driver of the SUV fled the scene but police found the SUV parked behind a tobacco barn about one mile away.  The driver was arrested and is jailed under a $30,000 bond.

The children, German Arroyo-Correa and Ariel Arroyo-Correa, were both taken to Wakemed in Raleigh in serious condition.  They are 10 years old and 5 years old and are students at Rock Ridge Elementary School.

A young man named Asen Zahariev was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident that happened in Corolla, North Carolina on Monday night.  According to reports, Mr. Zahariev was walking on Highway 12 when he was struck by a car.  The driver of the car turned himself in the next day and has claimed that he thought he had struck a deer.  The driver has been charged with felony hit-and-run.

Mr. Zahariev was from Bulgaria and was probably in the United States under a J-1 Visa.  Our firm is currently representing the family of a young man from Ukraine who was killed in an accident on the Outer Banks in 2012.  That case also involved a hit-and-run driver.  If you have a question about an accident involving a student worker in the United States under a J-1 Visa, contact the lawyers at Hendren & Malone for a free consultation.
