Anthony Lamattino Killed in North Carolina Ammonia Leak

A gentleman named Anthony Lamattino was tragically killed on Friday when ammonia leaked at a Statesville, North Carolina cold storage facility.  The ammonia leak happened at a facility called Lineage Logistics on Taylorsville Highway.  Mr. Lamattino was apparently a subcontractor working at the facility.  Another man named Carson Drawdy was injured.

In addition to the death of Mr. Lamattino and the injuries to Mr. Drawdy, several emergency responders were treated for exposure to the ammonia.  The North Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating this incident.

Anhydrous ammonia is a very commonly used substance in the meat packing industry and is frequently used as a refrigerant due to its superior thermodynamic properties and low cost.  However, this type of ammonia is very dangerous and toxic if inhaled.

Several years ago, our firm represented dozens of families residing near a poultry plant that experienced an unintended ammonia release.  Our experience with these cases tells us that ammonia should never be released into any environment and such a release only occurs when there is a failure in procedure or a mechanical failure.  Hopefully, the OSHA investigation will provide additional information about the cause of this release.
