A husband and wife from Virginia were tragically killed on Monday afternoon when a pickup truck hit them as they walked along NC Highway 12 in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The wreck happened around 2:30 pm and apparently was the result of the pickup truck driver falling asleep although that fact has not been verified. Based on available information, it appears that the husband and wife were following North Carolina law and walking along the side of the road facing traffic. Apparently, the pickup crossed over the center line and hit them from behind.
The woman who was killed was 40 years old and was a school teacher in Montpelier, Virginia where she had taught for the past 13 years. A child was also hurt in the wreck but fortunately was able to be released from the hospital after receiving care.
The driver of the pickup, who has not been identified, has been charged in the wreck.
