Serious Crash on US 421 in New Hanover County, NC Results in Injuries

A very serious crash on US Highway 421 in New Hanover County, NC on Tuesday afternoon has resulted in very serious injuries.  The crash happened at around 1:15 pm on US 421 near the intersection with I-140.  According to available information, a Honda Civic traveling in the southbound lane of US 421 was rear-ended by a Toyota.  The force of the impact pushed the Civic into oncoming traffic where it was hit head-on by a truck.

The driver of Civic was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for emergency surgery.  The truck driver was also treated for injuries.  The driver of the Toyota was charged with a failure to reduce speed.

At this point, it is not clear why the driver of the Toyota failed to reduce speed or whether the driver was distracted by the use of a cell phone or a similar device.  If I were a victim of this crash, I would certainly want to know why this very preventable crash occurred.  Hopefully, the driver of the Toyota has sufficient insurance to cover the very serious claims arising from this crash.
