A gentleman named Paul Rutherford was tragically killed on Monday afternoon in an accident involving a FedEx tractor-trailer. The accident happen on N.C. Highway 71 when the tractor-trailer jackknifed on the roadway blocking the lane for Mr. Rutherford. Mr. Rutherford’s vehicle was traveling in the opposite direction and slid under the trailer. Mr. Rutherford was declared dead at the scene. He was 30 years old and from Maxton, NC.
The were was apparently heavy rain at the time of the accident but all drivers have a duty to maintain control of their vehicle and to drive at a safe speed given current road conditions. It certainly appears that the driver of the Fedex truck failed to do so and now a young man has lost his life. The driver of the Fedex vehicle has been charged with several infractions including misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
