Minivan Accident Kills One, Injures Others from Norfolk, Virginia

As reported by WRAL-TV:

Calypso, N.C. — One person was killed and at least five other family members were injured Wednesday when their minivan pulled in front of a tractor-trailer in Duplin County, the state Highway Patrol reported.

The Virginia family was returning from a trip to Carolina Beach when the wreck occurred.

The minivan was driving on West Trade Road in the small town of Calypso and was trying to cross U.S. Highway 117 when it was struck by an 18-wheel hog truck, said Highway Patrol Sgt, Will Thurston.

The minivan was carrying four adults and three children. A male adult was killed and a female in critical condition was taken by helicopter to WakeMed. Four other were taken by ambulance to area hospitals. A volunteer firefighter working the wreck told WRAL News that the van contained three generations of family members.

No charges are expected to be filed against the trucker driver, Thurston said.

The intersection where the wreck occurred has a flashing light and has been the scene of numerous accidents, Thurston said. The North Carolina Department of Transportation has added rumble strips and a stop sign to improve safety, he said.
