Horse Drawn Buddy Driver Killed in Maxton, North Carolina Wreck

As reported by the Fayetteville Observer:

LUMBERTON – A Maxton man was killed Friday night after a car crashed into the back of a horse-drawn buggy he was operating on Red Hill Road, the Highway Patrol said.

The accident happened at 9:22 p.m., according to a report filed by Trooper M.J. Miles.

Zelbert Locklear, 56, of 12829 U.S. 74 West, was traveling west in a horse-drawn buggy that had no lights or reflectors on it, the report said.

A westbound 2002 GMC truck driven by Roger Lee Hunt of the 1500 block of Canal Road in Pembroke, hit the buggy, the report said.

The impact allowed the horse to become free, and it ran into the side of an eastbound 1997 Nissan driven by Desiree Chavis, 27, of Chav-An Drive, according to the report.

Locklear was killed, the report said. It was not known whether the horse was hurt or killed, a spokeswoman said.

Hunt and Chavis were not hurt, the report said.

No charges will be filed, the report said.
